Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Chinese Minister Liu Jianchao reaffirm the deepening partnership between Singapore and China, emphasizing cooperation in digital and green economy sectors.
In a significant diplomatic engagement on March 27, 2024, Minister Liu Jianchao of the International Department of the Communist Party of China made an official visit to Singapore, where he met with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. This visit underscored the continued strengthening of Singapore-China relations, especially after the two nations upgraded their ties to an 鈥淎ll-Round High-Quality Future-Oriented Partnership鈥 in April 2023.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Lee and Minister Liu expressed satisfaction with the robust state of bilateral relations, reiterating a mutual commitment to broaden cooperation not only in traditional sectors like trade and investments but also in emergent areas such as the digital and green economy. Minister Liu provided updates on China鈥檚 current priorities, with both parties agreeing on the significance of collaboration between Singapore, China, and other like-minded partners to foster regional economic integration.

The visit also featured a dinner hosted by Singapore’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan, in honor of Minister Liu. The dinner was an opportunity to reaffirm the excellent state of bilateral relations and discuss avenues for deeper and broader cooperation. Amidst the complex global challenges, both ministers were optimistic about continuing the positive momentum of bilateral collaboration to unlock new growth opportunities for both countries and the wider region.
The discussions extended to ASEAN-China relations and other regional and international developments, highlighting the importance of building an open, peaceful, and inclusive region. Minister Balakrishnan particularly welcomed China鈥檚 ongoing engagement with ASEAN, noting the mutual benefits of such engagement.
Minister Liu’s visit, concluding on March 28, marks another milestone in the diplomatic relationship between Singapore and China, reinforcing the countries’ shared vision for a prosperous and integrated future.
