Singapore, 3 June 2025 鈥 The Embassy of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste in Singapore held a commemorative reception on Monday evening at Voco Orchard, marking the 23rd Anniversary of the Restoration of Independence Day. The event was led by H.E. Ambassador Alexandre Tilman and Mrs. Antonieta Chung, and attended by esteemed diplomats, officials, and business leaders. Guest-of-Honour Indranee Thurai Rajah, Minister in the Prime Minister鈥檚 Office of Singapore, delivered the keynote address.
The evening was marked by reflection on Timor-Leste鈥檚 post-independence progress and its imminent accession to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), anticipated by the 47th ASEAN Summit. The event highlighted not only national pride but also the evolving bilateral relations between Timor-Leste and Singapore.
Ambassador Alexandre Tilman, speaking on behalf of President Jos茅 Ramos-Horta, shared heartfelt sentiments, 鈥淲e celebrate not only the 23rd anniversary of our restoration of independence, but also our growing partnership with Singapore, a nation that extended a hand of friendship since our earliest days of sovereignty.鈥
He underscored Singapore鈥檚 vital role in Timor-Leste鈥檚 development, referencing joint initiatives such as the Singapore-Timor-Leste ASEAN Readiness Support (STARS) Package, which has trained over 175 Timorese officials in preparation for ASEAN integration. 鈥淪ingapore鈥檚 engagement has not been transactional; it has been transformational. Every interaction has been marked by respect, trust, and a genuine belief in Timor-Leste鈥檚 potential,鈥 said Ambassador Tilman.
Minister Indranee Rajah affirmed Singapore鈥檚 continued support, 鈥淭imor-Leste can count on Singapore to step up our support as you run your last mile before achieving ASEAN membership. This is a momentous step in your extraordinary journey as Asia鈥檚 youngest democracy.鈥
She praised the growing people-to-people and youth exchanges, highlighting educational collaborations, mutual visa waivers, and bilateral training in governance and trade law. She also acknowledged the increasing interest from Singaporean investors in sectors such as hospitality and infrastructure.
