Leaders officiate ceremony marking major step forward in sustainable cross-border energy and industrial development

SINGAPORE, On Monday, 16 June 2025 Singapore and Indonesia marked a new chapter in their green economic partnership with a Milestone Ceremony for Project Development, held at Parliament House as part of the annual Singapore-Indonesia Leaders’ Retreat. The event was officiated by Prime Minister of Singapore Lawrence Wong and President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto, following their joint press statement earlier in the day.

The ceremony celebrated the formal implementation of three key Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) signed in Jakarta on 13 June 2025. The agreements—on Cross-Border Electricity Trade (CBET), Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), and the development of a Sustainable Industrial Zone (SIZ)—were inked by Singapore’s Minister-in-charge of Energy and Science & Technology, Dr Tan See Leng, and Indonesia’s Minister for Energy and Mineral Resources, Dr Bahlil Lahadalia.

Both leaders jointly launched the initiative by pressing a symbolic digital button, signalling the start of efforts to realise large-scale decarbonisation projects that aim to create new investment opportunities, facilitate regional energy transition, and reinforce long-term economic cooperation.

President Prabowo echoed this sentiment, affirming Indonesia’s commitment to collaborative projects that align with global efforts to tackle climate change and support inclusive development.

Dr Tan See Leng added, “Today’s milestone ceremony marks a shared commitment by Singapore and Indonesia to advance our cooperation in clean energy and decarbonisation. The three MOUs on CBET, CCS and the SIZ will pave the way for impactful projects that boost economic growth, catalyse investments, create good jobs, and support our countries’ decarbonisation plans. I look forward to working closely with Minister Bahlil Lahadalia and Indonesian counterparts to transform our ambitions into action for both our countries and our peoples.”

This strategic partnership not only highlights bilateral commitment to sustainable development, but also serves as a regional model for how cross-border cooperation can drive progress in renewable energy, carbon management, and industrial transformation.
