Families and local artists create an interactive storybook celebrating Punggol鈥檚 rich past and dynamic present at One Punggol.

On Sunday, 13 July 2025, the Punggol Coast and Punggol West communities launched their leg of the PAssionArts Festival 2025 at One Punggol, transforming the space into a living canvas of local history and creativity.

Residents, families, and young artists gathered to complete 鈥淭he Interactive Story of Punggol Town鈥, a giant, multi-sensory storybook installation that traces Punggol鈥檚 journey from its humble kampung beginnings to its modern waterfront identity.

At the heart of the showcase was a colourful 3D map crafted with handcrafted wooden cut-outs depicting Punggol鈥檚 heritage 鈥 from Punggol otters and cheeky monkeys to beloved landmarks like Coney Island and the Lorong Halus (Red) Bridge. Today鈥檚 landscape of HDB blocks coexists with kampung chickens, painting a vivid timeline of change and continuity. The collaborative piece was made possible by 40 residents and local artist Lim Jia Ren, who led pre-festival workshops to design and build the installation鈥檚 intricate details.

Adding to the immersive experience, the installation is brought to life through sound and light. Visitors can activate gentle sounds of local wildlife and flowing water, while LED lights illuminate Punggol鈥檚 waterways, turning the map into a glowing tribute to the neighbourhood鈥檚 enduring spirit of community.

The interactive storybook鈥檚 cover was completed with leaf motif designs hand-drawn by residents of all ages, ensuring that this community artwork tells not only Punggol鈥檚 story but also the personal stories of those who shape and call it home.
