The new development marks a major step forward for Singapore鈥檚 Marina Bay, enhancing its global status as a hub for business, tourism, and entertainment.
Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Lawrence Wong, officiated the groundbreaking ceremony for the Marina Bay Sands expansion project on 15 July 2025, just weeks ahead of Singapore鈥檚 60th year of independence.
Reflecting on Singapore鈥檚 remarkable journey from a small island nation to a thriving global city, Mr Wong emphasised Marina Bay鈥檚 transformation from open sea in the 1970s to an iconic waterfront symbol of Singapore鈥檚 resilience and progress. Today, Marina Bay stands as a dynamic centre for business, finance, tourism, and entertainment, recognised worldwide for its distinctive skyline and its place in the nation鈥檚 collective memory.
The expansion project will further refresh Singapore鈥檚 skyline with new attractions, including a public rooftop destination and a 15,000-seat arena for international concerts and events. Additional convention and exhibition spaces will strengthen Singapore鈥檚 standing as a premier destination for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE).
This project forms part of Singapore鈥檚 broader vision for the Greater Southern Waterfront, an ambitious plan to revitalise an area six times the size of Marina Bay, stretching from Marina East to Pasir Panjang. The wider development will integrate new commercial, recreational, and residential spaces, including public housing for Singaporeans.
Mr Wong highlighted that the Marina Bay Sands project reflects Singapore鈥檚 enduring commitment to constant renewal and strong partnerships. He acknowledged Las Vegas Sands鈥 pivotal role in transforming Singapore鈥檚 tourism landscape since 2005 and expressed confidence that this next phase of development will continue to create opportunities for Singaporeans in hospitality and tourism.
