As part of IN Diplomacy鈥檚 Singapore National Day Edition Feature, Mongolia and Singapore mark 55 years of diplomatic relations with a reception honouring decades of bilateral growth.
Singapore 鈥 June 11, 2025, marks the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Mongolia and the Republic of Singapore鈥攁 milestone that reflects a strong and steadily evolving partnership built on mutual respect, shared interests, and a vision for enduring cooperation.
Diplomatic relations between the two countries were formally established in 1970. In 1975, His Excellency Mr. Dashtseren Buyant, the first Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Mongolia to the Republic of Singapore, presented his Letters of Credence to then-President of Singapore, Benjamin Henry Sheares. At the time, Mongolia had not yet opened an embassy in Singapore, and Ambassador Dashtseren was concurrently accredited from New Delhi, India.
Over the past five and a half decades鈥攑articularly in the 21st century鈥攑olitical, economic, and cultural ties between Mongolia and Singapore have expanded significantly. Frequent high-level visits have played a key role in strengthening bilateral relations. From Mongolia, Prime Minister Enkhbayar Nambar visited Singapore in 2002, followed by Prime Minister Batbold Sukhbaatar in 2011, President Elbegdorj Tsakhia in 2013, and Prime Minister Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrai in 2022. On the Singaporean side, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong visited Mongolia in 2016 to participate in the 11th ASEM Summit.
The relationship between the two countries is further supported by several key bilateral agreements. These include the Agreement between the Government of Mongolia and the Government of the Republic of Singapore on the Promotion and Protection of Investments, and the Agreement between the Government of Mongolia and the Government of the Republic of Singapore for the Avoidance of Double Taxation and the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion with Respect to Taxes on Income. These agreements have laid the legal foundation for expanded economic cooperation and investment flows.
Singapore is currently Mongolia鈥檚 third-largest foreign investor. In 2021, the total bilateral trade turnover reached USD 277.87 million鈥攁 reflection of the growing economic engagement between the two countries.
To encourage further trade and investment cooperation, both sides have launched targeted initiatives in recent years. Investment-centered events such as 鈥淢ongolia鈥檚 Capital Market Connectivity: Singapore鈥 and the 鈥淢ongolian Investment Forum: Singapore鈥 have been regularly organized in Singapore. Since 2024, the Singapore Business Federation has also begun hosting annual investment forums in Mongolia, bringing large delegations of Singaporean business leaders. Mongolian business representatives are likewise active participants in major global events hosted in Singapore, such as SWITCH and the Singapore FinTech Festival.
People-to-people ties continue to strengthen with the mutual visa-free travel arrangement, allowing citizens of both Mongolia and Singapore to travel to each other鈥檚 countries for up to 30 days without a visa. This has greatly facilitated tourism, business exchange, and academic engagement.
To commemorate these achievements, the Embassy of Mongolia in the Republic of Singapore hosted a reception on 27 June 2025, celebrating Mongolia鈥檚 National Day鈥攖he 104th Anniversary of the People鈥檚 Revolution鈥攁nd the 55th anniversary of the establishment of Mongolia鈥揝ingapore diplomatic relations.
As Mongolia and Singapore look to the future, both nations remain committed to deepening their collaboration across all sectors and building on the solid foundation of friendship and cooperation established over the past 55 years.

On the auspicious occasion of the 60th National Day of the Republic of Singapore, the Embassy of Mongolia extends its warmest congratulations and best wishes to the Government and the friendly people of Singapore. Over the past six decades, Singapore has achieved remarkable progress and become a symbol of innovation, resilience, and good governance. Mongolia values the strong and growing ties of friendship and cooperation between our two nations, and we look forward to further deepening our partnership in the years to come. May Singapore continue to prosper in peace, unity, and harmony.
