The South African High Commission in Singapore marked 31 years of democracy with a Freedom Day reception, celebrating unity, partnership, and recognising contributors to strengthening South Africa鈥揝ingapore ties.
SINGAPORE, 8 October 2025 鈥 The High Commission of the Republic of South Africa in Singapore hosted a diplomatic reception to commemorate Freedom Day 2025, marking 31 years since South Africa鈥檚 first democratic elections. The event, attended by diplomats, business representatives, and friends of South Africa, celebrated the nation鈥檚 journey towards freedom and equality while honouring partners who have contributed to deepening bilateral relations between South Africa and Singapore.
Her Excellency Madiepetsane Charlotte Lobe, High Commissioner of South Africa to Singapore, led the celebration and reflected on the historic significance of 27 April 1994, when South Africans of all races cast their votes for the first time. 鈥淲e pause to commemorate not only the birth of our democracy but also the enduring spirit of unity, resilience, and hope that defines the Rainbow Nation,鈥 she said.
This year鈥檚 celebration was held later than usual, as the High Commission opted to move the event following Singapore鈥檚 general elections in May. H.E. Lobe extended warm congratulations to Singapore on its 60th anniversary of independence, underscoring shared values of progress, inclusivity, and friendship.
Highlighting South Africa鈥檚 G20 presidency in 2025, the High Commissioner said, 鈥淲e are honoured to bring the voices of Africa and the Global South to the world鈥檚 most influential economic forum. Singapore鈥檚 participation during our presidency reflects our commitment to inclusive and equitable global governance.鈥
The event also coincided with South Africa Focus Week 2025, which runs from 6 to 11 October in Singapore. The initiative gathers South African government officials, business leaders, and academic representatives to explore collaborations with Singapore across innovation, trade, sustainability, and education.
During the evening, the High Commission presented Friends of South Africa Awards, recognising individuals and organisations that have actively supported South Africa鈥檚 growth and engagement in Singapore. Among the awardees was Sun Media Pte Ltd, led by Ms Nomita Dhar, CEO & Editor-in-Chief, for the company鈥檚 contribution to promoting South Africa鈥揝ingapore relations through media and public diplomacy.
鈥淥ur gratitude goes to partners who have walked this journey with us,鈥 said H.E. Lobe. 鈥淵ou have not only talked with us but walked the talk 鈥 building genuine connections that translate into tangible progress.鈥
The Guest of Honour for the evening, Dr Janil Puthucheary, Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment and for Education, congratulated South Africa on the milestone. 鈥淔reedom Day marks the first time all South Africans, regardless of race, exercised their democratic right to vote. It is a powerful reminder that justice and equality are not to be taken for granted,鈥 he said.
Dr Puthucheary commended South Africa鈥檚 leadership on the international stage, particularly through its G20 presidency under the theme 鈥淪olidarity, Equality, Sustainability.鈥 He also noted the strong people-to-people and economic ties between the two countries, highlighting active participation by companies such as Olam, Wilmar, Surbana Jurong, CarTrack, and TimeBank in each other鈥檚 markets.
The evening concluded with a toast to President Cyril Ramaphosa and the people of South Africa, followed by the South African National Anthem and cultural performances. Guests were invited to celebrate the shared values of freedom, friendship, and collaboration that define South Africa鈥檚 partnership with Singapore.
As H.E. Lobe remarked, 鈥淥ur relationship with Singapore is built on mutual respect, shared values, and a belief in the power of collaboration. Tonight鈥檚 celebration reminds us that freedom is not only about history鈥攊t is about the bridges we continue to build together.鈥
