ASEAN and Singapore discuss economic integration, DEFA progress, and preparations for ASEAN Chairmanship 2027.
The Secretary-General of ASEAN, Kao Kim Hourn, met with Gan Kim Yong, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry of Singapore, on the sidelines of the 32nd ASEAN Economic Ministers (AEM) Retreat in Taguig, Philippines. The meeting focused on advancing ASEAN鈥檚 economic agenda and strengthening regional cooperation.
The engagement took place in the context of the 32nd AEM Retreat, which convened economic leaders and policymakers to discuss regional priorities under the ASEAN Economic Community. The discussion provided an opportunity to review key developments and coordinate efforts in addressing emerging economic challenges.
During the meeting, both sides discussed Singapore鈥檚 preparations for its upcoming ASEAN Chairmanship in 2027, as well as the progress of negotiations on the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA). They also exchanged views on external economic relations, sustainability initiatives, and the evolving global geo-economic landscape.
Both parties reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing ASEAN鈥檚 economic integration agenda. They expressed their intention to maintain close cooperation in the lead-up to Singapore鈥檚 Chairmanship, with a view to strengthening regional resilience and promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
