Philippine Embassy hosts book talk on pageantry, culture, and women鈥檚 leadership during National Women鈥檚 Month
The Philippine Embassy in Singapore, through its Sentro Rizal Singapore, hosted a book talk by Gene Segarra Navera on his publication 鈥淏eauty Spectacle: Pageants, Fan Culture, and the Filipino Adoration for Queens鈥. The event was held at the newly relaunched Sentro Rizal premises in Singapore as part of the Embassy鈥檚 National Women鈥檚 Month programme.

The programme formed part of the Embassy鈥檚 National Women鈥檚 Month activities under the theme 鈥淲E for Gender Equality and Inclusive Society,鈥 highlighting discussions on women鈥檚 leadership and representation. The session brought together members of the Filipino community, academics, creatives, and Embassy officials for dialogue on cultural and social perspectives surrounding pageantry.
In her opening remarks, Joyleen E Santos, First Secretary and Consul General, noted that the theme drew inspiration from the babaylans of pre-colonial Philippine society, recognised for their leadership and moral authority. She highlighted that while pageantry is often associated with glamour, it has also served as a platform for Filipinas to represent communities and advocate for meaningful causes.
During the session, Dr. Navera presented key insights from his 2025 publication, discussing the historical roots of Filipino engagement with beauty pageants, the role of women鈥檚 agency within pageantry, and the influence of fan culture in shaping the industry. He also addressed evolving perspectives and complexities within pageantry, including its cultural significance and ongoing discourse.
An open forum followed, moderated by Dardanelleis Balisi Lizaso, where participants engaged in discussions on the author鈥檚 research, creative process, and emerging trends in pageant culture.
In her closing remarks, Jhullie Anne A Beniahan, Second Secretary and Consul, emphasised the importance of such platforms in fostering dialogue on women鈥檚 empowerment and leadership. She encouraged continued support for initiatives that promote gender equality within Filipino communities.
Copies of the book were presented to Medardo G Macaraig, Ambassador of the Philippines to Singapore, and Consul General Santos, to be included in the Sentro Rizal collection.
The event was attended by nearly 50 participants and concluded with a networking session, reinforcing community engagement and cultural exchange among attendees.
