Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, participated in the High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance on 18 July 2026, held on the sidelines of the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai, China. Bringing together heads of government, leaders of international organisations, industry representatives and academics, the meeting served as a platform to discuss the opportunities and challenges presented by the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence.

Held under the theme “AI Partnership for a Brighter Future,” the high-level dialogue explored how AI can be harnessed to accelerate sustainable development, strengthen common security, promote inclusiveness and improve global AI governance. Participants exchanged perspectives on fostering responsible innovation while ensuring that the benefits of AI are shared broadly across societies.

During his remarks, Dr. Kao outlined ASEAN’s perspectives on AI governance, highlighting the region’s efforts to develop frameworks that encourage innovation while promoting transparency, trust and accountability. He emphasised the importance of balancing technological advancement with policies that support ethical AI development and safeguard the interests of ASEAN’s diverse communities.
