Mondelz launches RM90 million Crumb Tower in Shah Alam, expanding chocolate manufacturing
On 11 September 2026, Mondelz International officially launched its completed RM90 million Crumb Tower at the Cadbury Confectionery plant in Shah Alam, Selangor. The investment, the companys largest at the site, was designed to increase local chocolate manufacturing capabilities, strengthen supply-chain resilience and support future regional supply.
The launch was officiated by Dato Seri Amirudin bin Shari, Dato Menteri Besar Selangor, with Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid, Chief Executive Officer of the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), also present. The investment builds on Mondelz Internationals more than 50 years of manufacturing operations in Selangor, with Cadbury products produced in Shah Alam since 1974.
The new facility enables chocolate crumb, a key component in chocolate production, to be manufactured locally. Previously imported from markets including South Africa and Australia, local crumb production is expected to increase site self-sufficiency, strengthen supply-chain resilience and provide capacity to support markets beyond Southeast Asia.
The Crumb Tower incorporates three advanced manufacturing systems: a fully enclosed high-capacity powder handling system, a new-generation T-reactor, the first of its design in Malaysia, and an advanced fat handling system. The systems support an automated and digitally controlled production process designed to meet international quality and food-safety standards, with Halal requirements integrated throughout production.
YAB Dato Seri Amirudin said, Mondelzs continued investment in Shah Alam reflects the confidence global companies place in Selangors industrial ecosystem and talent.
Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim said MIDA was pleased to have supported the development, noting that the investment demonstrated the value of advanced technology, local talent development, stronger domestic supply chains and future export opportunities. He also highlighted that Malaysias food manufacturing sector secured RM4.9 billion in approved investments in the first half of 2026, representing a 40.9 per cent year-on-year increase.
Mr. Simon Crowther, Managing Director of Mondelz International Malaysia and Singapore, said the investment reflected the companys confidence in Malaysia and its Shah Alam operations. By producing crumb locally, we are building greater self-sufficiency while positioning Shah Alam to play a larger role within our regional manufacturing network.
The project also supported local technical expertise through training for Malaysian engineers and operators in process control, data analysis and equipment maintenance. Local suppliers involved in the technology have also been qualified to support other Mondelz sites globally.
With the new facility, the Shah Alam plant is positioned as a reference plant for chocolate crumb operations within Mondelz Internationals global manufacturing network.
