The Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Singapore hosted a diplomatic reception on 23 July 2026 to commemorate Egypt’s 74th National Day and the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Egypt and Singapore. Ethiopia is developing the Bishoftu International Airport as a next-generation aviation hub designed to strengthen Africa’s connectivity, trade and tourism. The project reflects the country’s ambition to join the ranks of global gateway cities such as Singapore, Dubai and Istanbul.

Ethiopia is advancing plans for the Bishoftu International Airport, a landmark infrastructure project that aims to establish the country as one of Africa’s leading aviation gateways. Located near Bishoftu, outside Addis Ababa, the mega airport is envisioned as more than a passenger terminal, serving as an integrated hub for aviation, logistics, trade, tourism and investment. The development comes as Africa seeks stronger transport networks to support economic growth and regional integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The project builds on the success of Ethiopian Airlines, which has developed one of Africa’s largest international aviation networks connecting the continent with destinations across Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas. As Addis Ababa Bole International Airport approaches its capacity limits, Bishoftu International Airport is expected to provide the infrastructure needed to accommodate future passenger and cargo growth while reinforcing Ethiopia’s role as a bridge between Africa and the world.

Beyond aviation, the new airport is expected to become a catalyst for economic development by supporting industries including logistics, manufacturing, hospitality, tourism and export trade. Designed with extensive cargo facilities and an airport city concept, the project seeks to create new opportunities for businesses while improving market access for Ethiopian exports. Its strategic location also strengthens Addis Ababa’s position as the diplomatic capital of Africa, home to the African Union and numerous international organisations.

The development reflects a broader global trend in which major airports serve as engines of national growth and international competitiveness. The newly launched Plurilateral Arrangement on Cooperation on Non-Tariff Barriers aims to enhance collaboration among participating economies by addressing regulatory and procedural obstacles that can hinder the smooth flow of international trade. The declaration supports greater use of digital processes and documentation to streamline international trade and improve connectivity among participating economies.
