Malaysia continues to play a strategic role in Scoot’s regional network, with the low-cost carrier operating 130 weekly flights to 12 destinations amid robust demand for leisure and business travel. The airline is also expanding across Southeast Asia through new routes, fleet investments and digital innovation.

Malaysia remains one of the most important markets for Scoot, the low-cost subsidiary of the Singapore Airlines (SIA) Group, supported by sustained demand for both leisure and business travel. Speaking to Bernama, Scoot Chief Commercial Officer Mr. Calvin Chan said the airline currently operates 130 weekly flights connecting Singapore with 12 destinations across Malaysia, making it the foreign airline serving the highest number of destinations in the country. For the financial year ended 31 March 2026, Scoot carried more than 2.2 million passengers on its Malaysian routes, representing a 14 per cent year-on-year increase.

According to Chan, Malaysia’s strategic importance extends beyond point-to-point travel, serving as a vital source of connecting passengers into the wider Singapore Airlines Group network via Singapore. Strong tourism demand, fuelled by the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign, has further strengthened travel between the two countries. In the first two months of 2026 alone, Malaysia welcomed 3.4 million visitors from Singapore, accounting for nearly half of all international tourist arrivals during the period. Scoot’s Malaysian network currently covers Ipoh, Kota Bahru, Kota Kinabalu, Kuala Lumpur, Kuantan, Kuching, Langkawi, Melaka, Miri, Penang, Sibu and Subang.

Looking ahead, Chan said Southeast Asia will remain Scoot’s primary growth engine, driven by rising disposable incomes, expanding airport infrastructure and increasing demand for affordable short-haul travel. Over the past year, the airline has expanded its regional footprint by launching new services to Chiang Rai, Palembang, Medan, Tokyo Haneda, Belitung and Pontianak, while increasing flight frequencies to destinations including Bali, Jakarta, Lombok, Manado, Phuket, Sibu, Changsha, Okinawa and Vienna. Scoot now operates a network of 85 destinations across 18 countries and territories with a fleet of more than 60 aircraft.

To support future growth, Scoot continues to invest in both fleet renewal and technology. The airline recently expanded its Airbus A320neo family orderbook to 20 aircraft, with additional deliveries beginning from 2028, enabling greater flexibility to launch new routes and strengthen regional connectivity. Meanwhile, its Embraer E190-E2 aircraft allows the carrier to serve secondary cities and airports with infrastructure constraints, complementing its Airbus A320 and Boeing 787 fleets. Chan added that Scoot is also enhancing operational efficiency and customer experience through digitalisation and artificial intelligence, including upgrades to its AI-powered virtual assistant Marvie, expanded self-service airport capabilities and AI-driven operational systems.

Scoot also reaffirmed its long-term commitment to Malaysia through its three-year strategic partnership with Tourism Malaysia, signed in August 2025. The collaboration, which runs until 2028, aims to promote Malaysia across key international markets, including Singapore, China, Australia and Indonesia, through joint marketing initiatives. Sarawak-owned AirBorneo has commenced its expansion into regional markets with new services to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, while reaffirming its commitment to maintaining vital rural air connectivity across Sarawak and Sabah.

AirBorneo Airways has embarked on a new chapter in its growth strategy by expanding beyond East Malaysia with commercial services to key regional destinations, while continuing to provide essential rural air services across Sarawak and Sabah. The Sarawak government-owned airline officially launched its inaugural Kuching–Kuala Lumpur flight on 20 July, marking the beginning of its broader commercial operations and strengthening connectivity between East and Peninsular Malaysia.

Speaking at a press conference following the inaugural flight, Sarawak Premier Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Johari Tun Openg announced that AirBorneo will launch its first international service between Kuching and Singapore on 22 July in conjunction with Sarawak Day, with flights to Jakarta expected to commence within the next two months. Looking ahead, the airline plans to expand its network to additional ASEAN cities, reinforcing economic cooperation, trade and people-to-people ties between Sarawak and neighbouring countries, particularly Singapore and Indonesia.

The expansion follows the Sarawak government’s acquisition of MASwings, enabling AirBorneo to retain its responsibility for serving rural communities in the interior regions of Sarawak and Sabah while developing a commercially viable network beyond the two states. Malaysia Fest 2026 will bring an extensive showcase of Malaysian fruits, food and culture to Singapore, highlighting unique agro-products while aiming to attract more than 180,000 visitors and achieve RM15 million in sales.

Malaysia Fest (MF) 2026 is set to showcase a diverse range of distinctive Malaysian agro-products in Singapore, with a special focus on rare fruits that have the potential to expand into the international market. Organised by MegaXpress International Pte Ltd with the support of the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) and Tourism Malaysia, the four-day festival will take place at Singapore Expo from 30 July to 2 August under the theme “Unveil the Wonders of Malaysia”.

Speaking during the soft launch of the festival on 17 July, FAMA Senior Director of the International Market Division, Mr. Noorsham Ramly, said the event aims to introduce Singaporean consumers to Malaysian fruits that are rarely found even within Malaysia. He explained that many of these fruits are currently cultivated on a limited scale or grow naturally in forest areas, and stronger market demand could encourage wider commercial production and industrial development. The ninth edition of Malaysia Fest will feature 343 exhibition booths and is expected to welcome more than 180,000 visitors over four days. The Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MICCI) says major infrastructure projects, led by the RTS Link and the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone, are set to strengthen Johor’s position as a regional hub for trade, investment and cross-border business.

Major infrastructure initiatives, including the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link and the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), are expected to transform Johor’s economic landscape and reinforce the state’s role as a strategic gateway for trade, investment and cross-border commerce. The developments are also supported by expanding logistics networks and continued investments in industrial and digital infrastructure.

Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MICCI) Southern Region Chairman Mr. Lee Ting Kiat said Johor’s ongoing infrastructure projects would define the state’s next chapter of economic growth. He noted that the RTS Link would significantly improve travel reliability between Johor and Singapore, enabling businesses to plan operations more efficiently and giving investors greater confidence in the state’s long-term prospects.

Mr. Lee explained that businesses currently face unpredictable travel times when crossing the Causeway to meet clients, move employees or conduct commercial activities. With the RTS Link providing faster and more dependable connectivity, companies are expected to benefit from greater operational certainty, while Johor’s residential and commercial property markets, particularly within the city centre, are also likely to experience stronger growth.

On the JS-SEZ, Mr. Lee said the initiative would create opportunities extending beyond major investors to include manufacturers, logistics providers, engineering firms, technology companies, professional service providers and other supporting industries. While investment incentives remain important, he emphasised that infrastructure readiness, seamless connectivity and well-established industrial ecosystems continue to be decisive factors for businesses considering investment in Johor.

Mr. Lee also encouraged small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to prepare for Johor’s economic transformation by strengthening their digital capabilities, obtaining relevant certifications and making full use of government grants and support programmes. He said businesses that invest in these areas early would be better positioned to capitalise on the growing investment inflows and emerging opportunities across the state.

Prior to the interview, Ms. Nomita met several Singapore leaders who had received H.E. He reaffirmed that Malaysia and Singapore shared a relationship that was “strong, deep-rooted, and comprehensive,” while stressing that such ties “need to continuously be nurtured.” He expressed hope that Malaysia had played a small part in further strengthening mutual trust and confidence between the two countries.

He also thanked Sun Media, describing it as “a valued partner of the High Commission,” and expressed confidence that the close collaboration would continue. He also noted that Sun Media and the High Commission would be working together on a commemorative publication, The Malaysian High Commission in Singapore: A Gateway to Closer Ties, documenting the mission’s role in advancing bilateral relations.
