President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed were honoured with a named orchid and hosted at a tea during their State Visit to Singapore.

Singapore, His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Madam Sajidha Mohamed were honoured with the naming of a new orchid hybrid during a visit to the National Orchid Garden at the Singapore Botanic Gardens. The orchid was officially added to Singapore’s “VIP Orchids” collection, a tradition that celebrates distinguished state visitors.

The naming ceremony was part of the President and the First Lady’s ongoing State Visit to Singapore, held from 29 June to 2 July 2025. During their visit to the Botanic Gardens, the President and First Lady signed the visitors’ book and were given a briefing on the garden’s history and botanical significance.

In a separate engagement, First Lady Madam Sajidha Mohamed attended a tea reception hosted by Mrs Jane Ittogi Shanmugaratnam, First Lady of the Republic of Singapore. The event took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, following the ceremonial welcome for the visiting dignitaries.

During the tea, both First Ladies exchanged views on their respective roles and philanthropic efforts.These engagements highlighted the cordial and growing ties between the Maldives and Singapore, underscoring both countries’ commitment to deepening friendship through cultural exchange, diplomacy, and shared traditions.

President Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed received a ceremonial welcome and attended a state banquet in Singapore, celebrating 50 years of Maldives–Singapore diplomatic ties.

Singapore, 30 June 2025 – His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Madam Sajidha Mohamed were accorded a ceremonial welcome at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Singapore, marking the commencement of their State Visit from 29 June to 2 July 2025. The visit commemorates the golden jubilee of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Singapore.

The Maldivian delegation was received by His Excellency Tharman Shanmugaratnam, President of the Republic of Singapore, and Mrs Jane Ittogi Shanmugaratnam, First Lady of Singapore. President Muizzu inspected the Guard of Honour at the ceremony following which the senior officials of each side were introduced to the Heads of State.

Later, President Muizzu and the First Lady attended a state banquet hosted in their honour by President Tharman and Mrs Shanmugaratnam. In his address, President Muizzu expressed appreciation for Singapore’s longstanding support, including its contributions to humanitarian assistance and capacity-building in the Maldives. He highlighted the deep-rooted relationship between the two countries, which extends beyond formal diplomatic ties to include robust people-to-people and trade connections.

President Shanmugaratnam, in his remarks, emphasised the importance of continued collaboration between small island states, particularly in areas of mutual interest such as climate resilience, sustainable development, and economic innovation. He welcomed the outcomes of bilateral discussions held during the visit, including the signing of several memoranda of understanding.

The event also featured the joint unveiling of commemorative stamp designs to mark 50 years of Maldives–Singapore diplomatic relations. Cabinet ministers and senior officials from both governments were also in attendance at the banquet, reinforcing the significance of the occasion and the commitment to strengthening ties between the two nations.

On 30 June 2025, His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu of the Republic of Maldives and His Excellency Prime Minister Lawrence Wong of Singapore witnessed the signing of three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) today, marking a significant milestone in bilateral relations. The signing ceremony took place at Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs as part of President Muizzu’s ongoing State Visit.

The MoUs signal a shared commitment to expanding collaboration in critical areas. 

1. Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Republic of Maldives and the Government of the Republic of Singapore on Cooperation in Capacity Building

2. Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Tourism and Environment of the Republic of Maldives and the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment of the Republic of Singapore

3. Memorandum of Understanding between Institute of Technical Education Republic of Singapore and the Ministry of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development of the Republic of Maldives for Cooperation in the fields of Higher Education, Educational Policy, Technical and Vocational Education and Research

Maldives and Singapore reaffirm strong bilateral ties during high-level meeting marking 50 years of diplomatic relations.

Singapore, 30 June 2025 – His Excellency Dr Mohamed Muizzu, President of the Republic of Maldives, met with His Excellency Lawrence Wong, Prime Minister and Minister for Finance of the Republic of Singapore, during his ongoing State Visit.

The meeting coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations. Both leaders acknowledged the historic milestone and reiterated the value of their enduring partnership. President Muizzu and Prime Minister Wong highlighted the important role Singaporean businesses have played in the Maldives’ tourism development and discussed strategies to diversify the Maldivian economy through expanded fisheries exports.

The discussion also explored investment opportunities to support the Maldives’ transition to renewable energy, including its target of generating 33 per cent of electricity from renewable sources by 2028. They further exchanged views on cooperation in education, technical training, and urban planning, identifying these areas as vital for sustainable development.

As fellow small island states, the leaders agreed on the importance of enhancing collaboration on international platforms, particularly to address climate change. They reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and advancing mutual interests.

Singapore, His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu of the Republic of Maldives paid a courtesy call on His Excellency Tharman Shanmugaratnam, President of the Republic of Singapore, as part of his ongoing State Visit.

President Shanmugaratnam welcomed President Muizzu to Singapore, noting the significance of the visit which coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations. President Muizzu expressed his appreciation for the warm hospitality extended by the Government of Singapore during his stay.

The leaders reflected on five decades of enduring Maldives–Singapore ties and reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation. They discussed potential collaboration in training and education, renewable energy, and infrastructure development, as well as efforts to enhance the Maldives’ fisheries sector and diversify its economy.

To mark the occasion, President Muizzu presented a commemorative book to President Shanmugaratnam, highlighting milestones in Maldives–Singapore relations since formal ties were established on 20 February 1975.

President Mohamed Muizzu begins official visit from 30 June to 2 July 2025, marking 50 years of diplomatic relations between Singapore and the Maldives.

Singapore, President of the Republic of Maldives, His Excellency Dr Mohamed Muizzu, has commenced a State Visit to Singapore from 30 June to 2 July 2025, at the invitation of President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. This marks President Muizzu’s first official visit to Singapore since assuming office and coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations.

President Muizzu will receive a ceremonial welcome where he will call on President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. In honour of the occasion, President Tharman and Mrs Jane Ittogi Shanmugaratnam will host a State Banquet for President Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, during which both leaders will unveil a commemorative stamp celebrating the milestone in bilateral relations.

The visit will also include high-level meetings with Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong. Both leaders are expected to witness the signing of several Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) in the areas of capacity building, sustainability, environmental cooperation, and vocational education and training. He will also participate in a High-Level Investment Forum hosted by Invest Maldives and visit Tuas Port, ITE Central, and URA Gallery to understand Singapore’s experiences in port management, technical and vocational education and training, urban planning and housing development. President Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha will also visit the National Orchid Garden where a new orchid hybrid, Vanda Mohamed Muizzu Sajidha Mohamed, will be named in their honour.

President Muizzu is accompanied by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed and a delegation comprising comprising nine Cabinet Ministers namely, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel, Minister of Defence Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon, Minister of Finance and Planning Moosa Zameer, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan, Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed, Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam, Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed, and Minister of Construction Housing and Infrastructure Abdulla Muththalib as well as other government officials.
