The programme reflected the shared commitment of South Africa and Singapore to advancing effective governance, accountability, and transparency through constructive dialogue.

During the visit, the delegation held meetings with Singapore’s Public Accounts Committee of Parliament and the Auditor-General’s Office. Discussions provided an opportunity to compare approaches to parliamentary oversight, audit processes, and institutional frameworks that support sound public financial management. The delegation also met with Singapore Auditor-General Ng Wai Choong and Deputy Auditor-General Rina Chua, fostering valuable exchanges on audit responsibilities and oversight mechanisms.

African Heads of Mission accredited to Singapore met on 13 May 2026 to reinforce regional cooperation, coordinate diplomatic initiatives, and advance the African Agenda.

Singapore, 13 May 2026 – The Africa Heads of Mission Group in Singapore reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening unity, cooperation, and shared diplomatic objectives during a meeting held on 13 May 2026.

The gathering brought together representatives from African diplomatic missions accredited to Singapore and was convened under the leadership of H.E. Madiepetsane Charlotte Lobe, High Commissioner of the Republic of South Africa to Singapore and Dean of the Africa Group.

The meeting was graciously hosted by the High Commission of Rwanda and attended by resident Heads of Mission representing South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, and Rwanda.

During the discussions, participants reviewed ongoing efforts to strengthen intra-African cooperation and align diplomatic activities within Singapore. The meeting also focused on enhancing collaboration among African missions and identifying opportunities to promote common interests across political, economic, and cultural spheres.

The Africa Heads of Mission Group serves as an important platform for consultation and coordination among African diplomatic representatives in Singapore. South Africa has been selected as the “Country in Focus” for the 77th Berlinale European Film Market in 2027, highlighting the country’s expanding film industry and its growing role in global creative collaboration.

South Africa has been officially announced as the “Country in Focus” for the 77th edition of the Berlinale European Film Market, scheduled to take place from 10 to 16 February 2027 in Berlin, Germany.

The announcement was made at a signing ceremony attended by representatives from South Africa’s Department of Sport, Arts and Culture and officials from the Berlinale.

Dr. Cynthia Khumalo, Director-General, Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, Republic of South Africa, said the designation holds major significance for the country’s film industry and national development. She noted that, given South Africa’s socio-economic challenges and global positioning, the recognition will provide valuable opportunities for filmmakers and showcase the country’s diverse storytelling landscape.

Ms. Tricia Tuttle, Festival Director, Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale), highlighted South Africa’s long-standing relationship with the festival. She said the selection reflects the vitality of South Africa’s film industry and its strong creative voice, adding that the programme will help deepen international collaboration and industry engagement.

South Africa’s film industry has been recognised as globally competitive, supported by experienced crews, diverse locations, and strong production infrastructure. The country continues to attract international productions due to its mix of urban centres, natural landscapes, and well-developed filming facilities.

A major milestone in South African cinema at the Berlinale came in 2005 when U-Carmen eKhayelitsha became the first South African film to win the Golden Bear, marking a historic moment in its relationship with the festival.

Mr. Gayton McKenzie, Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Republic of South Africa, said the recognition represents an important opportunity to expand co-productions, investment, and global partnerships. He added that South Africa is committed to addressing challenges in the film sector while strengthening international collaboration and industry growth.

Mr. Onke Dumeko, Acting Chief Executive Officer, National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), Republic of South Africa, described the announcement as a major milestone for South African cinema. He said it reflects years of industry development and will help elevate local filmmakers by connecting them with global platforms and audiences.

The National Film and Video Foundation said the initiative will strengthen access to international markets and support South African filmmakers whose work resonates globally.

Since its launch in 2017, the Berlinale European Film Market “Country in Focus” initiative has showcased selected global film industries, offering insights into their creative sectors while encouraging international cooperation. Previous focus countries have included Mexico, Canada, Norway, Chile, Italy, Spain, Morocco, and others.

The 2027 edition is expected to place South Africa at the centre of global film industry engagement, creating new opportunities for co-production, distribution, investment, and cultural exchange across film, television, animation, and emerging media.

Working visit focuses on AI, cybersecurity and digital skills development under growing South Africa–Singapore cooperation

From 12–15 April 2026, Minister Mondli Gungubele, Deputy Minister of the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT) of South Africa, led a high-level delegation to Singapore to strengthen cooperation in digital transformation, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.

The delegation included Mr. Trevor Rammitlwa, Chief Executive Officer of the National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa (NEMISA). The visit was supported by the South African High Commission in Singapore, led by High Commissioner Madiepetsane Charlotte Lobe, with assistance from First Secretary (Political) Gavin du Preez.

The working visit centred on advancing digital skills development, artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity, key priorities in South Africa’s digital transformation agenda. As the country reviews its National Digital and Future Skills Strategy and develops a National AI Policy while strengthening measures against cybersecurity risks and online harms, engagements in Singapore provided valuable insights and opportunities for collaboration.

During the visit, the delegation held meetings with several Singapore institutions, including Government Technology Agency of Singapore (GovTech) to explore citizen-centric digital government services and Smart Nation initiatives. Discussions were also held with Singapore Post (SingPost) on its transformation into an e-commerce logistics platform and potential cooperation with the South African Post Office.

The delegation also met with Singapore Cooperation Enterprise to discuss internationalisation and capacity-building initiatives. A courtesy call was held with Minister of State for the Ministry of Digital Development and Information, Rahayu Mahzam, where both sides reaffirmed strong bilateral ties and exchanged views on AI governance, cybersecurity and digital government.

This engagement was followed by a briefing session with agencies under MDDI, including the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA), and the Open Government Products (OGP), to explore deeper cooperation and knowledge sharing.

Additional engagements included discussions with NEC Laboratories Asia Pacific on the co-creation of AI and generative AI solutions for public safety, healthcare and social impact. The delegation also visited the National University of Singapore Institute of Systems Science to learn how Singapore’s Digital Academy supports whole-of-government digital skills development.

The visit follows the entry into force of the 2023 Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries on cooperation in information and communications technology, ratified by South Africa’s parliament in March 2026. Singapore’s global leadership in digital governance, AI regulation and cybersecurity makes it a natural partner for South Africa’s digital priorities.

The working visit underscored South Africa’s commitment to building a digitally skilled, AI-ready and cyber-secure society while strengthening cooperation with international partners in innovation and technology.

“Give To Gain” themed engagement underscores the importance of leadership development, resilience, and communication skills for women leaders across ASEAN and beyond

In line with the International Women’s Day 2026 theme, “Give To Gain”, the High Commissioner of South Africa in Singapore, HE Madiepetsane Charlotte Lobe, returned to the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (LKYSPP) Executive Education for the 2nd Edition of the Women in Leadership Advancing Together programme (23–27 March 2026). The initiative aims to advance women’s empowerment by strengthening leadership capabilities and cultivating critical skills such as decision-making, strategic thinking, persuasive communication, and resilience.

The programme brings together women leaders from ASEAN and beyond, creating a platform for knowledge exchange and capacity building. It also reflects the growing importance of sustained leadership development initiatives in preparing women to take on influential roles across public and private sectors.

In her remarks, the High Commissioner emphasised the importance of continuous women’s leadership development programmes as a strategic necessity in today’s evolving geopolitical environment. She highlighted that such initiatives foster institutional resilience, challenge the status quo, and integrate diverse perspectives needed to address global disruptions, including war and conflict, climate change, rising costs of living, supply chain instability, and energy crises.

This year’s focus was placed on “Persuasive Communication” as a core leadership skill for women leaders. The High Commissioner structured her presentation around Aristotle’s three artistic proofs—Ethos (credibility), Pathos (emotion), and Logos (logic)—noting that mastering these tools enables leaders to tailor their messages effectively, connect with diverse audiences, and achieve meaningful influence in decision-making spaces.

Wits MBA students engage Singapore’s business and sustainability landscape during South Africa-led immersion programme

The South African High Commission in Singapore hosted a cohort of MBA students from Wits Business School as part of their international immersion programme. The visit aimed to provide global perspectives and practical insights into business environments, with a focus on linking African markets to international opportunities.

The programme formed part of the MBA curriculum and included visits to Singapore and Malaysia. During the Singapore segment, students explored topics such as ease of doing business, economic development, and sustainability. Madiepetsane Charlotte Lobe, High Commissioner of South Africa to Singapore, welcomed the cohort and briefed them on the work of the mission and opportunities within Singapore’s business landscape.

An initial session was conducted in collaboration with the Character and Leadership Academy at the premises of the Ang Mo Kio Constituency Merchants Association. The session featured presentations by Delane Lim and Cheng Yi, who shared insights on Singapore’s economic model and business environment. The programme also included visits to local businesses in Ang Mo Kio and exposure to Singapore’s food culture.

As part of the sustainability component, the delegation visited Gardens by the Bay to learn about integrated approaches to horticulture, tourism, and environmental innovation. The visit provided insights into how sustainability is incorporated into urban development and public spaces.

The immersion programme highlighted Singapore’s role as a global business hub and provided participants with experiential learning opportunities. The High Commission expressed its support for the students’ academic journey and their continued pursuit of knowledge in global business and innovation.
