The United Kingdom celebrated Armed Forces Day with a reception at Eden Hall in Singapore, bringing together representatives from the Singapore Armed Forces, the diplomatic community, academia and industry.

Major General Lee Yi-Jin attended the event as Guest of Honour alongside General Sir Rob Magowan. The reception concluded with a sunset ceremony supported by HMS Spey.

The event also marked the transition of the UK Defence Adviser to Singapore and Head British Defence Staff from Brigadier Eddie Maskell-Pedersen to Colonel Charlie Scott.

The reception celebrated the service and dedication of the United Kingdom’s Armed Forces while recognising the longstanding defence partnership between the United Kingdom and Singapore.

In a congratulatory letter, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong expressed confidence that Singapore and the United Kingdom will deepen cooperation under Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s leadership.

Singaporean Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong congratulated Prime Minister Andy Burnham on his appointment as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in a letter dated 20 July 2026. He conveyed his best wishes as Prime Minister Burnham took office and reaffirmed Singapore’s commitment to its longstanding partnership with the UK.

Prime Minister Wong noted the Strategic Partnership between Singapore and the United Kingdom had been built on decades of trust and close cooperation. Looking ahead, he expressed confidence that both countries would expand collaboration in trade, innovation, science and technology, and defence.

He also pointed to new opportunities for cooperation in 2027, since Singapore will assume the ASEAN Chairmanship and the United Kingdom will hold the G20 Presidency. He added that the two countries were well placed to work together on multilateral cooperation and to address shared regional and global priorities during a period of geopolitical and economic change.

Prime Minister Wong concluded his letter by saying he looked forward to meeting Prime Minister Burnham and welcoming him to Singapore.

Senior international defence leaders visited Singapore as part of the Royal College of Defence Studies Overseas Study Tour to deepen discussions on Indo-Pacific security and UK–Singapore cooperation.

The British High Commission in Singapore hosted the Royal College of Defence Studies in Singapore for its Overseas Study Tour, bringing together senior leaders from around the world to discuss security and defence cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.

The week-long visit included engagements with government representatives, think tank discussions, and cultural programmes designed to strengthen dialogue and international partnerships. Officials said the visit highlighted the strong and longstanding collaboration between the United Kingdom and Singapore in areas related to defence, regional stability, and strategic cooperation.

The programme provided an opportunity for participants to exchange views on evolving geopolitical and security challenges in the Indo-Pacific, while also promoting deeper understanding between international defence and policy leaders.

The British High Commission noted that sustained dialogue and partnership remain important in addressing regional and global security issues. High-level visits, maritime partnerships, climate cooperation and education initiatives highlighted the growing bilateral relationship between the United Kingdom and Singapore

The British High Commission Singapore highlighted a series of significant diplomatic, economic and strategic engagements in April, reinforcing the strong and multifaceted partnership between the United Kingdom and Singapore.

A major highlight during the month was the visit by senior UK economic officials, including HM Treasury’s International Economics Director Robert Woods, Bank of England Head of Analysis Matt Trott, and Vishnu Papineni, HM Treasury’s Head of Emerging Markets and International Economic Analysis. The delegation met with key stakeholders in Singapore to discuss global economic imbalances and the implications of the Middle East crisis on the UK, Singapore and the wider region.

The discussions formed part of ongoing G20 cooperation efforts aimed at ensuring stability and predictability in global economic growth amid evolving geopolitical and financial challenges.

Maritime cooperation also remained a key pillar of UK-Singapore relations throughout April. During Singapore Maritime Week 2026, UK Minister for Aviation, Maritime and Decarbonisation Keir Mather joined British High Commissioner Nik Mehta for a series of engagements focused on sustainable maritime growth, innovation and decarbonisation.

The UK delegation attended the event’s Opening Address and participated in discussions with Singapore leaders including Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong and Minister Jeffrey Siow. Meetings focused on strengthening cooperation in areas such as green shipping, cleaner fuels, port innovation and maritime digitalisation.

British High Commissioner Nik Mehta also welcomed Minister Keir Mather to Singapore during a visit to PSA Singapore’s Pasir Panjang Port, where both sides exchanged views on how the UK and Singapore can deepen collaboration on port innovation, investment, maritime skills development and sustainable growth.

In another significant strategic engagement, the UK participated in the International Partnership for Maritime Cyber Security (IPMCS), alongside Australia, Canada, Denmark, Singapore and the United States. Discussions focused on enhancing international cooperation to protect the maritime sector from evolving cyber threats, while supporting the implementation of the recently approved Maritime Cyber Code.

Education cooperation between the UK and Singapore also advanced during the month. Cardiff University and Singapore Institute of Management signed a new partnership agreement that will allow students in Singapore to study programmes in artificial intelligence, data analytics and computer science beginning in October 2026.

The agreement further strengthens educational and people-to-people ties between both countries, with more than 7,000 Singaporeans pursuing studies in the United Kingdom annually.

The High Commission additionally congratulated Singapore Officer Cadet Khaireen Bin Misrawi for successfully completing training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, where he was presented with the Sandhurst Medal by Major General Nick Cowley OBE. Nineteen international cadets from 15 countries graduated during the ceremony, including four from Southeast Asia.

April also saw the UK reaffirm its commitment to sustainability and climate resilience through the UK-Singapore Green Economy Framework. Marking Earth Day, the UK highlighted its partnership with Singapore in advancing high-integrity climate finance initiatives aimed at supporting resilient communities, sustainable livelihoods and cleaner economic growth across Southeast Asia.

The High Commission additionally reminded travellers that the UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme has been fully enforced since February 2026, encouraging Singapore travellers to review updated travel requirements before visiting the United Kingdom.

On the cultural front, the High Commission celebrated World Art Day by highlighting the importance of artistic exchange between the UK, Singapore and the international community, while also promoting the UK’s creative industries and innovation agenda.

The month also featured tributes marking 100 years since the birth of Queen Elizabeth II, reflecting on her enduring legacy of service and global impact.

Additional outreach activities included showcasing Welsh culinary heritage through celebrations surrounding laverbread, a traditional seaweed delicacy regarded as part of Wales’ cultural identity, as well as public engagement initiatives led by British High Commissioner Nik Mehta highlighting diplomatic life and UK-Singapore connections.

Senior RSAF leaders took part in a new international leadership programme hosted by the Royal Air Force in London.

From 15 to 18 December 2025, the Royal Air Force Tedder Academy of Leadership hosted the inaugural RAF Executive Warrant Officers’ Programme at King’s College London, in London, United Kingdom.

The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) was represented by Command Chief Air Power Generation Command, ME5 Saravanan, who participated in the programme alongside senior warrant officers from air forces around the world. Air Force Command Chief, ME6 Ng See Lye, attended the programme as a mentor, providing guidance and support to participants.

The programme aimed to strengthen strategic leadership by deepening participants’ understanding of geopolitical and geo-military developments in an increasingly complex global operating environment. Through structured discussions and engagements, participants examined how evolving security dynamics affect air power and defence leadership.

The programme also provided a platform for professional exchange, allowing participants to engage counterparts from other air forces, share perspectives, and learn from diverse leadership practices. Tri-nation event explored regional cooperation and Britain’s evolving Indo-Pacific strategy.

A conference on strengthening the United Kingdom’s engagement with the Indo-Pacific region was held at King’s College London today, drawing partners, diplomats and academic experts from across the region. The event was jointly organised by the High Commissions of Australia, India, and Singapore, and featured discussions on how global fragmentation is reshaping international cooperation.

UK Minister for the Indo-Pacific, Sema Malhotra, delivered the keynote address, emphasising the importance of sustained British engagement as geopolitical competition intensifies. Professor Danny Quah from the National University of Singapore spoke in two panels, outlining how economically vulnerable small states in the Indo-Pacific were increasingly challenged by eroding multilateralism and the simultaneous “America” and “China” shocks. He proposed that pathfinder multilateralism—cooperation built on aligned incentives rather than rigid power structures—could offer a pragmatic way forward.

During the post-lunch session, Singapore’s High Commissioner Ng Teck Hean joined Indian High Commissioner Vikram Doraiswami and Australian High Commissioner Stephen Smith in a panel moderated by former foreign policy adviser John Bew. The High Commissioners exchanged views on the implications of a fractured global landscape and described how they continued to work with the UK Government as it refined its Indo-Pacific strategy.

Singapore’s delegation included Deputy High Commissioner Nicola, Second Secretary Mervyn, and MFA officers Clarissa and Claudine. The conference also acknowledged Australian High Commissioner Stephen Smith, who is approaching the end of his posting in London, with the organisers expressing appreciation for his contributions.

Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal visited Singapore on 12–13 November 2025 to celebrate six decades of diplomatic ties, meeting key leaders and visiting prominent British-linked institutions.

SINGAPORE — On 12–13 November 2025, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal travelled to Singapore at the invitation of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to commemorate 60 years of diplomatic relations between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Singapore. Accompanied by Sir Tim Laurence, The Princess Royal engaged in a series of official visits and meetings over the two-day tour.

The visit began at the British High Commission Offices, where Her Royal Highness unveiled a plaque renaming the pavilion building as ‘The Princess Royal Pavilion’ to mark the milestone in bilateral relations. She then held audiences with the President of Singapore and with Prime Minister Mr. Lawrence Wong, reflecting the strong political and diplomatic partnership between the two nations.

Her Royal Highness also toured key industrial and technological sites. At the Airbus Asia Training Centre, the world’s largest flight crew training facility, she observed A350 flight simulations. Later, she visited the Rolls-Royce Seletar Campus, Singapore’s largest Rolls-Royce manufacturing facility established in 2012, where she received briefings on production operations and visited the company’s Regional Training Centre, the first of its kind in Asia.

Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, Princess Anne, undertook an official visit to Singapore from 12 to 13 November 2025. The visit underscored the longstanding relationship between Singapore and the United Kingdom, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

On 12 November, The Princess Royal called on President Tharman Shanmugaratnam at the Istana. Both sides reaffirmed the deep and multifaceted ties shared by Singapore and the UK, including strong people-to-people links. They also exchanged views on key areas of mutual interest such as sustainability, biodiversity, education, and skills development.

The following day, The Princess Royal met Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong at the Istana. They welcomed the milestone anniversary of diplomatic relations and reiterated the strength of bilateral cooperation in trade, defence, and security. Both also discussed ways to deepen collaboration in new and emerging domains such as innovation, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and research and development.

As part of her programme, The Princess Royal attended an orchid-naming ceremony at the Singapore Botanic Gardens on 12 November. A new orchid hybrid, Dendrobium Anne, was named in her honour, continuing Singapore’s tradition of orchid diplomacy.

The two-day visit reflected the shared commitment of Singapore and the United Kingdom to further strengthen their partnership and explore new avenues of cooperation as both countries look towards future global challenges and opportunities.

Singaporean and UK military officers discussed evolving global security dynamics during a dialogue at the Singapore High Commission in London.

A group of military officers attending the United Kingdom’s Advanced Command and Staff Course, including two Singaporean participants Major P. Skandan and Major Tan Jek-Kai, visited the Singapore High Commission in London for a dialogue session with High Commissioner Ng Teck Hean. The engagement provided an opportunity to exchange perspectives on global security challenges and deepening defence cooperation.

During the session, High Commissioner Ng emphasised how the post–World War II international order, once grounded in multilateralism and shared economic progress, had been reshaped by intensifying strategic rivalry and rising geopolitical fragmentation. He highlighted the increasing complexity of the security environment, driven by both traditional and emerging threats.

High Commissioner Ng also discussed how modern defence strategies must now address non-traditional risks such as cyberattacks, disinformation campaigns, and influence operations, which have become central elements of contemporary security considerations. A Spectacular Evening of British Music in the Heart of Singapore

Singapore, 8 March 2025 – The British High Commission, in collaboration with the Tanglin Symphony Orchestra, hosted an enchanting evening of music at the Singapore Botanic Gardens, commemorating 60 years of diplomatic relations between the United Kingdom and Singapore. The event, titled Great in the Gardens, featured a diverse selection of British musical pieces, including classical masterpieces and iconic stage and screen compositions.

A highlight of the evening was a captivating performance by world-renowned Welsh mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins OBE, whose presence elevated the celebration with her extraordinary vocal artistry. Set against the scenic Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage, the event drew a large audience, from diplomats to music enthusiasts, all gathered to enjoy the rich cultural heritage shared by both nations.

The Guest of Honour for the evening was Dr. Maliki Osman, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, Second Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Second Minister for Education, who graced the occasion alongside esteemed guests from the diplomatic and cultural communities.

British High Commissioner to Singapore, H.E. Nikesh Ashvinkumar Mehta, welcomed guests with an inspiring speech, reflecting on the deep-rooted historical connections between the UK and Singapore. He acknowledged the significance of hosting the concert in the Botanic Gardens, a place linked to British heritage since its founding by Sir Stamford Raffles in 1822.

“A Brit, Stamford Raffles, in 1822, made the decision to create a national garden in Singapore, and the relationship with Kew Gardens in the UK and Singapore has been 150 years in the making. So it is a proud place for us to have this event,” said H.E. Mehta. He also highlighted the UK’s global impact in creative industries, referencing renowned British artists who have performed in Singapore, from Elton John to Ed Sheeran.

As the event coincided with International Women’s Day, H.E. Mehta paid tribute to the empowerment and inspiration of women worldwide. “As we celebrate International Women’s Day and the empowerment of women across the world, I can think of no greater artist to have here on this stage than Katherine Jenkins,” he added.

Attendees were encouraged to bring their picnic mats and immerse themselves in the enchanting atmosphere, making Great in the Gardens a memorable evening celebrating music, heritage, and the enduring friendship between the UK and Singapore.
