The Philippine Embassy attended two seminars organised by the Philippine Studies Programme of the ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore on 29 and 30 September 2026. The seminars examined Philippine governance, democratic accountability and the role of young Filipinos in political participation.

The first seminar, titled “Governing from the Margins: The Philippine Vice Presidency and the Road to City Hall�, was held on 29 September and featured Mayor Ms. Leni Robredo, former Vice President of the Philippines. The session examined her experiences in national and local governance, including her six years as the Philippines’ 14th Vice President and her subsequent service as Mayor of Naga City.

During the seminar, Ms. Robredo shared her leadership insights and experiences in governance as Mayor of Naga City and as former Vice President. The discussion considered her transition between national and local government and the practical aspects of local governance and public service. The seminar was moderated by Dr. Aries Arugay, Coordinator of the Philippine Studies Programme at ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute.

The second seminar, “From Demographic Leverage to Democratic Voice: Youth Mobilization and the Future of Philippine Politics�, was held on 30 September. It featured Dr. Elma Laguna, Mr. Francis “Kiko� Aquino Dee and Ms. Rafaela “Paeng� David, who discussed the role of Filipino youth in Philippine politics and the democratic process.

The seminar examined how young Filipinos participate in political and civic life, including issues relating to political participation, accountability, democratic institutions and youth mobilisation. The speakers also discussed the relationship between the country’s large youth population and its political participation.

Both seminars were moderated by Dr. Arugay and were conducted as hybrid events at the ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute, with participants able to attend in person or online. The events were organised under ISEAS’ Philippine Studies Programme, which focuses on research and discussion concerning the Philippines.
